Volunteering for Bowdoin

Alumni Council

Please refer to the Alumni Council portion of this site to see how you can volunteer.

Bowdoin Alumni Schools and Interviewing Committee (BASIC)

BASIC supports and expands the outreach of the Admissions Office through the use of active and informed alumni volunteers in the recruitment of qualified students for Bowdoin. With support from the Admissions Office, members of BASIC serve as representatives of the College to students, parents, and guidance counselors in their local communities

You must be logged in to access the Basic Handbook.  Please log in or register for Polarnet using the links under PolarNet Services at the top of the page.  After you have logged in, return to the Volunteering at Bowdoin page and you will be able to access the handbook.

Career Advisory Network

Sharing information about your career or particular area of expertise can be an invaluable service to students and your fellow alumni/ae. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Career Advisory Network should contact the Career Planning Center.

Fund Raising

Gifts to the annual funds are solicited each year by members of your own class, parents, and friends of Bowdoin, working with members of the Annual Giving staff. These solicitations are done through a series of mail appeals and personal communications. If you are interested in becoming a Class Agent or a member of the Parents Executive Committee contact the Office of Annual Giving at (207) 725-3183.  If you are already a Class Agent or Associate Agent, find volunteer updates and assignment information at agweb.bowdoin.edu/agweb. Please report any trouble with your login to the Office of Annual Giving.

Reunion committees

Class Reunions are held every five years and are planned by a committee of classmates working with the Alumni Relations staff. If you are interested in helping plan your next reunion, contact Alumni Relations at (207) 725-3266 or alumni@bowdoin.edu.

Bowdoin Clubs

Bowdoin clubs hold a variety of social, educational and community-oriented activities each year. There are currently 25 active Bowdoin clubs around the country. Activities are planned for each regional club by committees of alumni/ae volunteers working with the Office of Alumni Relations. If you are interested in becoming involved with your local Bowdoin club, contact us by phone at 207-725-3266 or by email to alumni@bowdoin.edu. To find out whether there is a Bowdoin club in your area, please see the list of upcoming Bowdoin club events or call the Alumni Office at (207) 725-3266.

Award Nominations

At the upcoming spring meeting of the Alumni Council, the Council will select several award recipients to recognize dedicated service to Bowdoin in a number of areas.  I’m writing to request your input in compiling outstanding and diverse slates of nominees for these awards.
Below are descriptions of the awards which are being considered this spring.  I encourage you to nominate alumni who should be acknowledged for their service to Bowdoin – whether it is a year, ten years, or a lifetime of dedication.

Four different awards recognizing service to Bowdoin will be discussed at the Spring Conference.  Please know that it has been the practice of the Alumni Council’s Awards Committee in recent years to select recipients who are not currently members of the Board of Trustees or Alumni Council.  The rationale has been that serving in these roles is in itself an honor and the awards should therefore be presented to other individuals who are either current or former volunteers of the college.

The four awards include:

Award NameAward DescriptionCriteriaWhen Awarded
Club Volunteer of the YearRecognizes an individual who, in organizing at least one event or program in the preceding academic year, has demonstrated enthusiasm, initiative, and outstanding execution and achievement.Fall Conference Awards Banquet
Foot Soldier of Bowdoin AwardHonors an alumnus or alumna who exemplifies the role of a foot soldier of Bowdoin through his or her work for the development programs, BASIC, and/or other alumni programs during the prior year.Fall Conference Awards Banquet
Polar Bear AwardsHonors up to six alumni for significant personal contributions and outstanding dedication to Bowdoin through a record of service rather than a single act or achievement.Fall Conference Awards Banquet
Young Alumni Service AwardRecognizes distinguished and outstanding service to Bowdoin – honors a record of service rather than a single act or achievement.Awarded to a member of the 10 youngest classes (1999 – 2008).Fall Conference Awards Banquet

Please send nominations along with a brief supporting narrative to Eric Foushee at efoushee@bowdoin via email by Monday, February 2, 2009.
